  • Little Bluestem “The Blues” (Schizachyrium Scoparium) is an attractive, hardy ornamental with enhanced bluish tint, blooming purple in July/August. It can be used as a bordering plant due to its spread and can provide some shade for other plants, cover for wildlife and some privacy. It can spread aggressively if planted in the wrong location. Prone to forming clumps that can be separated. Lovely fall coloring.

  • Canaan Fir (Abies Balsamea-phanerolepis) is recommended for windbreaks and wildlife. A delicate spire-like evergreen producing soft dark green needles, very upright and open; often used as a Christmas tree and will grow in areas not well suited to other firs; resistant to spring frost injury, quite adaptable, but prefers wetter conditions and sandy, acidic soils, but quite intolerant of urban pollution. Consider applying a thicker mulch around root zone in cold microclimates. Sports conspicuous papery bracts protruding from the cones. Can be expected to live for 70 years or more.

  • Red Maple (Acer Rubrum) is the most abundant native tree in eastern North America and a favorite shade tree with brilliant fall color. The Red Maple is very tolerant of flooding but also drought tolerant. The Red maple is common over a very large area of the eastern Untied States, and its wood tends to be slightly heavier, stronger, and harder than other species in the grouping of soft maples, though it is still not as strong as hard maple. Red maple is used as a food source by several forms of wildlife.

  • Shellbark Hickory (Carya Laciniosa) is RECOMMENDED FOR WILDLIFE!!!! Edible Nut. The wood of shellbark hickory is hard, heavy, strong, and very flexible, making it a favored wood for tool handles. Desired for furniture, cabinets, and veneer. Similar to Shagbark Hickory, its bark separates into long, curved strips. Also, the Shellbark’s doesn’t grow as tall and has heavier branches than the Shagbark. Prefers bottomland and it is also called kingnut hickory, because it has the largest nut of all hickories.

  • American Hazelnut (Corylus Americana) is a medium to large shrub that is very adaptive and thrives in many conditions. It does occur naturally in thickets and pastures. Foliage turns a bright yellow to deep red in the fall. The Hazelnut supports over 130 species of butterflies and moth caterpillars and pro-vides food for many species of birds and mammals. The nuts are edible and can be roasted or ground into flour. Wind-pollinated, it’s recommended to plant 3-5 shrubs for optimal nut production. May be used as a windbreak.

  • Red Osier Dogwood (Cornus Sericea) is a medium to tall deciduous shrub, growing 5–13 feet tall and 10–16+ feet wide, spreading readily by under-ground stolons to form dense thickets. The branches and twigs are dark red, although wild plants may lack this coloration in shaded areas. The leaves are dark green above and glaucous below; fall color is commonly bright red to purple. The fruit is a globose white berry and provides food, as well as shelter for many species.
