American Hazelnut (Corylus Americana) is a medium to large shrub that is very adaptive and thrives in many conditions. It does occur naturally in thickets and pastures. Foliage turns a bright yellow to deep red in the fall. The Hazelnut supports over 130 species of butterflies and moth caterpillars and pro-vides food for many species of birds and mammals. It is commonly known as butterfly weed because of the butterflies that are attracted to the plant by its color and its copious production of nectar.
