American Hazelnut (Corylus Americana) is a medium to large shrub that is very adaptive and thrives in many conditions. It does occur naturally in thickets and pastures. Foliage turns a bright yellow to deep red in the fall. The Hazelnut supports over 130 species of butterflies and moth caterpillars and pro-vides food for many species of birds and mammals. The nuts are edible and can be roasted or ground into flour. Wind-pollinated, it’s recommended to plant 3-5 shrubs for optimal nut production. May be used as a windbreak.
