Shellbark Hickory (Carya Laciniosa) is RECOMMENDED FOR WILDLIFE!!!! Edible Nut. The wood of shellbark hickory is hard, heavy, strong, and very flexible, making it a favored wood for tool handles. Desired for furniture, cabinets, and veneer. Similar to Shagbark Hickory, its bark separates into long, curved strips. Also, the Shellbark’s doesn’t grow as tall and has heavier branches than the Shagbark. Prefers bottomland and it is also called kingnut hickory, because it has the largest nut of all hickories.
